We as parents and educators have all experienced COVID firsthand as a health crisis, but we certainly did not envision the insurmountable educational consequences, as highlighted in a recent press release by UNICEF.
While the disruptions to learning must end, just reopening schools is not enough. Students need intensive support to recover lost education. Schools must also go beyond places of learning to rebuild children’s mental and physical health, social development and nutrition.

In short, this lost education that Mr. Jenkins was referring to has resulted in learning gaps. During much of the virtual learning period, a great deal of responsibility fell on the parents. While parents are amazing and provide critical guidance to our children, we are no substitution for teachers and our homes are no substitutions for classrooms. Sadly, many children developed learning gaps while working from home. When such gaps go unattended, this creates a very troubling academic experience going forward. The material comes across disconnected, which gives children a very uneasy feeling.
