FIT HANDWRITING
Fit Handwriting:
As famous as the above saying is, in today’s digital age, much of society questions the need for penmanship. Hold your horses! Or, perhaps it’s more fitting to say—Shut down your electric cars! All joking aside, handwriting is slowly being chalked up as a lost art. The Common Core Curriculum, which sets the academic standards for every state, recently eliminated teaching children “Cursive” writing altogether.
Setting aside any emotional connection to the “lost art” of handwriting, as a science-driven organization, we look at everything from the standpoint of cognitive benefit. Edouard Gentaz, a Developmental Psychology Professor from University of Geneva said, “Handwriting is a complex task which requires various skills – feeling the pen and paper, moving the writing implement, and directing movement by thought.” In other words, the writing process has a cognitive component that simply cannot be replicated through typing or other digital media.
